Two more incidents of wild elephant attacks took place in Wayanad district on Friday fuelling the ongoing protest over the death of Tamil Nadu Native Arumukhan, 65, who was trampled to death on Thursday night near the Poolakkolli tribal hamlet.

A car near the Tholpetty check post and a house at Valluvadi near Bathery were damaged in the two separate incidents early in the morning. A farmer, Benny Malayakulangara, had a narrow escape from the attacked house.

Meanwhile, Forest department sources said efforts were on to chase the troublemaking elephants back to the forest. A rapid response team had already been deployed in the affected areas, they said.

The body of Arumukhan was handed over to relatives after post-mortem at Bathery taluk hospital on Friday. Forest department officials said they cleared all the files related to the speedy release of a compensation amount of ₹5 lakhs for his family.

The local residents from Erumakkolly and Poolakkolly tribal areas staged strong protests on Thursday and Friday flaying the alleged laxity on the part of the Forest department in countering the increasing wild elephant menace. They claimed that the elephant that killed Arumukhan had attacked five other persons from various tribal settlements.
