“Every day and every experience is a lesson. We must not consider anything as defeat,” said Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister Geeta Jeevan at the International Women’s Day Celebration at the Chennai Press Club held on Saturday.

Speaking at the event organised by the women members of the club, Madras High Court Judge Justice Manjula said: “Gender is a fast evolving phenomenon. Everyone likes to say that they are conducting gender sensitisation seminars. However, the modules have to be modified with respect to the needs of the company.”

Urging women to take care of their health, actor Gautami said whether it was family or social circles, the recognition or the move to understand a woman was very low. “We won’t be able to move forward if we wait for external validation. We need to claim our credit,” she said. Other members of media houses also participated in the event.

The Chennai Press Club also put forth two demands to the government — the establishment of a hostel facility for working journalists and a creche.

Police celebrations

The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) also celebrated International Women’s Day on Saturday with the participation of senior women IAS, IPS, and IRS officers.

Senior IAS officers Supriya Sahu and P. Amudha, and Seema Agarwal, Director-General of Police, Civil Supplies-CID were among those who participated. GCP Commissioner A. Arun also took part in the programme organised at the Rajarathinam Stadium. He commended the women officers for their contributions in public service. “They are symbols of women’s development in society and an inspiration to other women,” Mr. Arun added.

Marathons held

At the Thirumullaivoyal Convention Centre, Avadi City Police Commissioner K. Shankar flagged off a mini-marathon held to raise awareness on the police’s women helpline. Over 1,500 college students participated in the programme.

The Tambaram City Police also held a mini-marathon on East Coast Road to promote women’s empowerment and health awareness. Tambaram City Police Commissioner Dinesh Modak Abhin distributed certificates and prizes to the participants.
