On Independence Day members of the Uday Bharat Yuvak Mandal and other organisations will take part in a Walk for Nation carrying a giant tricolour to celebrate the spirit of Independence.

Addressing presspersons in Hubballi on Monday, convenors of the event Gopalkrishna Savanur, Chandrashekhar Gokak, Mallikarjun Shiraguppi and others said that the walkathon will originate from and conclude at Moorusavir Mutt Ground.

A giant national flag measuring 2,000 ft long and 10 ft wide will be taken out in a procession. The event is being held in association with Hirepet Sri Ganesh Utsav Mandali of Hubballi.

Mr. Savanur said that hundreds of students from various schools and colleges will participate in the event along with members from different walks of life.

“The event is aimed at instilling patriotism among the younger generation and also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the country,” he said.

A host of leaders, including Chairman of the Legislative Council Basavaraj Horatti, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, the former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, Labour Minister Santosh Ladm and others are expected to participate in the flagging off ceremony of the walkathon.

Mr. Chandraeshekhar Gokak said that the walkathon will be flagged off in the presence of Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami of Moorusavir Mutt at 11 a.m. on August 15.

Beginning from Moorusavir Mutt Ground, the walkathon will cover the thoroughfares of the city and conclude at the originating point, he said.

Previously, a 1,500 ft long tricolour was taken out in a procession in Hubballi 10 years ago and this time, the procession will have a 2,000 ft long tricolour. The organisers of the event also said that they will be trying to set a record this time. The details of the event will be sent to officials of Limca Book of Records.
