Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan on Wednesday urged the State government to increase the compensation for farmers who suffered crop loss due to unseasonal rains and non availability of adequate water in Cauvery river for irrigation purposes.

In a statement, Mr. Vasan said unseasonal rains in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu, last year, caused large scale damages to crops. Farmers also suffered due to non-availability of Cauvery water for irrigation, in another season. Though the State government had announced compensation for crop loss, farmers had been demanding to increase it. The State government should take into consideration the grievances of farmers and disburse compensation at the earliest, he added.
