Responding to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the delay in appointing the Vice-Chancellor for the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) University in Gadag, RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge slammed the former, asking him to follow the directions of the Supreme Court.

“Both Houses of the Legislature have passed the Bill. There has been no respect to it. If Governor is there to decide, why should we legislators be there? If they do not like what we are doing, what can I do,” he told presspersons here on Sunday.

His comments came on the Governor’s letter to the Chief Minister in which he set a deadline to appoint the Vice-Chancellor, failing which he would initiate the process.

The Minister pointed out that the process followed in universities in Uttar Pradesh and National Law School was similar to what was being planned in RDPR University.

“Let him give us a free hand, we will show reforms. The Legislative Assembly and the Council have passed the Bill after discussion. If there are any clarifications, we will write [to him]. We will try to convince [him]. Let us see. Instead of preaching us, let him follow what the Supreme Court has said on the Governor’s role and functioning.”
