Two teenagers were charred to death and four persons suffered burn injuries in a fire in east Delhi’s Shahdara on Sunday morning, a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said. The fire broke out at a storage godown, a 400 sq. yard tin shed structure, which also serves as a charging station for e-rickshaws and storage area for sugarcane juice machines.
The injured persons, one of whom has suffered 45% burns, were rushed to GTB Hospital for treatment. The two deceased, identified as Brijesh, 19, and Maniram, 18, were natives of Madhya Pradesh and sold sugarcane juice in Delhi.
The police have apprehended Vinod Rathore, the in-charge of the godown and further investigation is on. As per the preliminary inquiry, the fire is suspected to have been cause by an electrical short circuit from the charging station.
DFS chief Atul Garg said they received a call about a fire near Ram Mandir in Shahdara’s Moti Ram Road around 6.40 a.m., following which five fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot.
“By 8.30 a.m., the fire was brought under control,” he added.
After the incident, local BJP MLA Jitendra Mahajan reached the spot and asked the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate to hand over compensation to the kin of the deceased.
