The State government will take appropriate steps to prevent accidents such as the Karur stampede in future, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin said in Karur on Sunday (September 28, 2025).

“Such a tragedy should not have occurred and should not happen again. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has already announced an Inquiry Commission to probe the incident. Based on the Commission report, the Chief Minister will take appropriate legal action,” Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin said speaking to reporters after paying respects to the dead and calling on the injured at the Karur Government Medical College Hospital.

The Commission is expected to visit Karur this afternoon and start the probe, he said. “The Chief Minister was very sad and hence rushed immediately to Karur during the night. He was continuously in touch with me as I was abroad,” said Mr. Udhayanidhi who had cut short his foreign tour to visit Karur.

Commenting on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K.Palaniswami’s charge that there were shortcomings in security provided for the meeting, Mr.Udhayanidhi pointed out that the Leader of the Opposition himself had campaigned at the same spot a couple of days ago.

The Director General of Police has clearly explained the difference between the crowd expected as projected by the party and the actual turnout, how additional security was provided, and the delay in each of Vijay’s meetings. “I do not want to politicise or blame anybody. The Inquiry Commission will bring out the truth,” he said.

Answering a query, he said all political party leaders had a right to meet the people. “It is their democratic duty, and nobody can prevent it. However, depending on the crowd turnouts, the police make certain requests such as asking people not to climb trees or to disturb the public.”

Leaders of the parties have a responsibility (to adhere to them); when huge crowds turn up, they should arrive in time. “There are many other issues too,” he observed.
