Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Tuesday (May 27, 2025) alleged that the Chennai police obstructed and attacked women functionaries of his party at Vyasarpadi, when they were distributing aid to people affected by a fire in the area.
In a statement, Mr. Vijay said that on Monday (May 26), several huts were gutted in the fire that broke out at Mullai Nagar in Vyasarpadi. People who lost their homes and those evacuated as a precautionary measure were temporarily accommodated in a school nearby. To extend support to them, several TVK functionaries had visited the spot and distributed essential items such as blankets, clothes, mats, and food.
However, the police not only obstructed the TVK workers but also allegedly threatened them to leave. When a woman functionary of the party questioned the interruption, the police attacked her, he alleged. Another woman functionary’s clothes were torn. The injured party workers were admitted to Government Stanley Medical College for treatment, he said.
Condemning the incident, Mr. Vijay questioned whether Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condoned such actions by the police or gave orders to them to treat women with such cruelty.
“If this attitude against women continues, the TVK will not hesitate to launch massive public and legal campaigns,” he added.
