The Kumbakonam unit of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu and the Federation of All Traders Associations of Kumbakonam have urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to fulfil his election promise of creating a new district with Kumbakonam as headquarters.

In a resolution adopted at the general body meeting of the two organisations held here on Tuesday with Chola C. Mahendran, president, in the chair, pointed out that Mr. Stalin had promised to create the new district if voted to power and urged him to announce the formation of the new district immediately.

The meeting called upon the Centre to address “practical difficulties” in filing GST returns. It urged the government to give up the practice of levying penalties for mistakes in address and other clerical errors. The practice of issuing notices demanding accounts dating back to several years should be stopped forthwith, the resolution said.

Rail line for Mahamagam

The organisations called upon the Railways to immediately begin renovation of the Kumbakonam Railway Station as Mahamagam is to be celebrated in March 2028, attracting lakhs of pilgrim to the town. Although the ₹100 crore project has been cleared, the work has not begun yet. Funds should be allocated for track doubling between Villupuram-Thanjavur Main Line in the forthcoming Union Budget and the proposal for laying a new line between Kumbakonam-Jayamkondam-Vriddhachalam should be implemented at the earliest, it demanded.

The organisations called upon the State government to appoint a nodal officer and allocate funds to various departments for work to be executed in view of the mahamagam. An office of the HR&CE Department should be opened in the town to coordinate the work related to the festival.

The meeting criticised the increase in property and other tax levies by the Kumbakonam Corporation. The tax increase had caused distress among traders who were already reeling under the impact of online commerce.
