The State Cabinet on Thursday decided to opt only for the Elstone Estate in the first phase for building a township for the survivors of the July 30, 2024, landslides in Wayanad district.

The Cabinet also fixed ₹20 lakh as the sponsorship amount for building a house for the survivors.

The Cabinet decided to focus on Elstone Estate, which falls in Kalpetta municipality limits, alone in the first phase as the list of affected families prepared by the Wayanad District Collector does not exceed 430. Besides, families opting to settle outside the township with a compensation of ₹15 lakh also would be excluded from this list, the government said.

In the township, the houses will be constructed on seven-cent plots. The income limit of the beneficiaries will not be taken into account for the allocation of land. The house and land allotted as a residential unit will be heritable, but non-transferable for 12 years.

The Cabinet has suggested that the units be jointly allocated to the male and female heads of a family wherever possible. Although the property will be non-transferable for 12 years, the government will examine, on a case-by-case basis, individual applications for mortgaging the property.

Further, the Cabinet also took a decision regarding the Phase 2-B list containing households that are outside the no-go zone but isolated. The District Collector, Wayanad, will be asked to finalise the list by focusing exclusively on households that are within 50 metres outside the no-go zone that are totally isolated.

The allowance of ₹300 provided to the landslide survivors will be continued. The State Empowered Committee has been tasked with finalising a decision in this regard.
