Tottenham Hotspur defeated Burnley in their opening clash of the Premier League 2025-26 season, on Saturday (August 16). Richarlison scored two goals and Brennan Johnson sealed the win with the final goal in the first league match for the team under manager Thomas Frank.

Richarlison’s standout performance

Richarlison was the star of the showdown, scoring twice to keep the Spurs’ dominant position intact. His first goal came in the 10th minute, finishing a precise cross from Mohammed Kudus with a sharp strike. His second, an acrobatic volley in the 60th minute, also assisted by Kudus, doubled the lead, showcasing their remarkable partnership.

As Richarlison powered a strong start to Spurs’ new season, fans lavished praises for the Selecao forward’s skills and some of them even compared the striker to the legendary forward Ronaldo.

Brennan Johnson’s significant contribution

Brennan Johnson sealed the 3-0 scoreline with a composed finish in the 66th minute, poking the ball past Burnley’s goalkeeper after a superb through ball from Pape Matar Sarr.

Thomas Frank’s strategy yielded positive result

Thomas Frank’s influence was clear in Spurs’ dominant display, as they controlled 68% of possession and registered 16 shots, six on target. Despite missing key players like Dejan Kulusevski and Destiny Udogie due to injuries, young talents like Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray stepped up, with Bergvall looking lively and Gray solid in midfield.

Burnley’s struggles

Burnley, back in the Premier League after a strong Championship season, struggled to match Tottenham’s intensity. They managed 14 shots but only four on target, with Jaidon Anthony missing a key chance before Spurs’ second goal. Injuries, including Martin Dubravka’s shoulder issue, further hampered their efforts, leaving them unable to respond to Tottenham’s attacking prowess.
