Toll in Hubballi fire accident rises to seven as one more Ayyappa devotee dies

Another Ayyappa devotee from among the three being treated at KMC-RI Hospital in Hubballi for burns they suffered in a fire mishap died on Monday night taking the toll to seven.

The name of the 26-year-old deceased has been given as Tejeshwar Satri of Sainagar, Hubballi.

He was among the nine Ayyappa devotees who suffered burns in the fire caused due to an LPG leak in a temple building in Hubballi on December 23.

According to a KMC-RI bulletin, Tejeshwar, who suffered 70%-75% superficial to deep flame burns with severe inhalation injury, breathed his last at 7.50 p.m.

The condition of another devotee Prakash Barker continues to be very, very critical, the bulletin said and added that the condition of 11-year-old Vinayak Barker is stable. Vinayak Barker is recovering.

On December 26, two devotees died of burns. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah then announced compensation of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

Following the mishap, the government called expert doctors from Bengaluru to assist KMC-RI doctors in providing advanced burns treatment to the devotees.

However, the efforts of the doctors did not yield the required results and in the subsequent days, four more died of burns, taking the toll to six till Sunday.
