The Gandhi market in Tiruchi would not be relocated and would instead be developed and expanded at a cost of ₹50 crore, Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru said in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Addressing concerns raised by DMK MLA Inigo S. Irudayaraj in the House, Mr. Nehru said the Gandhi market would remain in its present location. He further said a wholesale and a retail market were on the anvil.

As for Mr. Irudayaraj’s concerns over the issues over drinking water supply in the eastern areas of the city, Mr. Nehru said the smooth supply of drinking water would resume within 10 days.

The Minister said he had discussions with the Corporation Commissioner and the engineers in this regard. The construction of a overhead tank with a capacity of 15 lakh litre was nearing completion and supply would be smooth within 10 days.
