The mangled remains of a car which collided with a mini-van at Kurungalur in Thanjavur district on July 8, 2025

Four persons including a three-year-old girl were killed and three others were injured in a road accident involving a car and a mini-goods carrier at Kurungalur on the Thanjavur-Vikravandi highway on Tuesday (July 8, 2025). The victims hailed from Perungalathur in Chennai.
According to police, the mishap took place around 10 a.m. when the car driven by Stalin (36) of Chennai and the goods carrier driven by Vignesh of Utharamangalam near Thanjavur, collided on the newly laid Thanjavur-Vikravandi highway. The car came to a halt after hitting the iron barricade on the left-side of the road.
While Vignesh was transporting paddy seedlings from Utharamangalam to Kurungalur, Stalin and others were headed to Thanjavur Big Temple from Kumbakonam in their car. On seeing the mishap, local residents rushed and rescued the injured persons out of the vehicles.

In the impact, Jaya (55) of Perungalathur died on the spot. Jaya’s husband Kumar (57), Durga (32) who was the wife of Stalin and daughter Niveni Surya (3) were declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Three other injured persons — the drivers Stalin, Vignesh and another occupant of the car, Monisha (30) — were admitted at the Thanjavur Medical College hospital.
The Thanjavur Taluk Police have registered a case and are investigating.
