Three persons of a family, including a nine-month old girl child, suffered burns when an electric vehicle caught fire while being charged in Maduravoyal on Sunday.

A senior official of the Avadi Police Commissionerate said Gowtham, his wife Manju, and their nine-month old daughter Ezhilarasi lived at Bhagyalakshmi Nagar. Gowtham had parked his battery-operated two-wheeler in the portico and put on the charger on Saturday night. He saw smoke emanating from the two-wheeler early morning on Sunday. When he tried to check the cause of the smoke, fire engulfed the electric vehicle and a motor kept nearby. Immediately, he tried to douse the fire and move to safety with his wife and daughter.

However, while escaping through the front door of the house all the three sustained burns. Neighbours rushed them to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The two-wheeler was gutted and Maduravoyal police began investigating the cause of the fire.
