K.K. Shailaja, MLA, inaugurating the distribution of menstrual cups to students at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Pattom, on Friday
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has launched a project to provide menstrual cups to girl students across government schools in the city. As part of the project, a total of 25,000 menstrual cups are being distributed to students to ensure menstrual hygiene. The reusable menstrual cups are considered to be a healthy, sustainable and affordable alternative to sanitary napkins, which also leads to generation of waste.
In the first phase, the project was launched at a function held at the St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School at Pattom on Friday with distribution of menstrual cups to girl students. K.K. Shailaja, MLA, inaugurated the distribution, presided over by Mayor Arya Rajendran. The project was envisaged as part of the Corporation’s annual plan for 2025-26.
Along with the launch of the menstrual cup distribution, awareness programmes on hygienic menstrual practices are also being held for the students to promote the use of sustainable alternatives.
