The Tamil Nadu government has started preparing new town development schemes for nine growth centres around Chennai, like Parandur on the outskirts, for orderly urban growth and development, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Friday.

Inaugurating the 17th edition of FairPro 2025, organised by CREDAI, Mr. Stalin said the aim of the new town development schemes was to decongest Chennai, boost economic growth, improve transport connectivity, and ensure sustainable growth of the city and its suburbs.

“Nine growth centres around Chennai — Minjur, Tiruvallur, Thirumazhisai, Mamallapuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Maraimalainagar, Thiruninravur and Parandur — will get new town development schemes. In the 10 years of [AIADMK] rule, such schemes were not taken up. This led to stagnation. But this government is determined to change the situation,” he said.

Pointing to the role of the DMK government in urban planning and development in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Stalin said: “The First and Second Master Plans for the Chennai Metropolitan Area were adopted during DMK rule. Our government is preparing the Third Master Plan. This Master Plan is being drafted with advanced technology, focussing on urban growth and development, better quality of life for the people, sustainable growth, and economic progress. Once adopted, the Third Master Plan will determine the growth and development of the city in the next 20 years.”

“To improve cities and villages across Tamil Nadu, 10 zonal plans are being prepared. Master Plans for cities such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Hosur, Salem, Tiruppur, Tiruchi, Vellore, and Tirunelveli are also being prepared. The Master Plan for Hosur has been released recently. Those for Coimbatore and Madurai will be released next month,” said Mr. Stalin.
