Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday (March 10, 2025) inaugurated Godrej Consumer Products Limited’s ₹515-crore manufacturing facility in Thiruporur taluk of Chengalpattu district near Chennai.
The Sate government, on August 10, 2023, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) for the facility. In 2024, the company conducted the groundbreaking ceremony, making an investment of ₹515 crore over the next five years. The plant has created over 1,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across various functions.
This is the largest single investment made by the company to boost its production capabilities. The plant, which spans 27 acres, was set up in a record time of 13 months.
Mr. Stalin inaugurated the plant in presence of Nadir Godrej, chairperson, Godrej Industries Group, and Sudhir Sitapati, MD and CEO of Godrej Consumer Products Limited
The plant officially commenced operations with the ceremonial activation of the production line by Mr. Stalin, who marked the occasion by overseeing the first production run, leading to the rollout of the inaugural Cinthol Original Soap.
‘Tamil Nadu a key market’
Speaking at the event, Mr. Stalin said the facility showed Godrej Group’s trust in Tamil Nadu. “Tamil Nadu is a key market for fast-moving consumer products as many companies have set up their bases here. Tamil Nadu is a favoured destination for investors. We are taking efforts to achieve $1 trillion economy by 2030,” he said.
The Chief Minister added that by choosing Tamil Nadu as the base for their facility, Godrej was not only contributing to the economic advancement of the State but also strengthening “our commitment to nurturing industries that drive innovation, create jobs, and uplift communities.” He assured support to the industry.
T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce, Tamil Nadu, said the plant was a smart manufacturing facility, aligning with Tamil Nadu’s push for advanced manufacturing.
Women, LGBTQIA+, PwD workforce
The facility plans to employ 50% women and 5% of employees from LGBTQIA+ communities and persons with disabilities. This commitment aligns with Tamil Nadu’s vision of inclusive and equitable industrial growth, Mr. Rajaa said.
“This cutting-edge facility not only supports our mission to deliver high-quality products to consumers but also places a strong emphasis on the well-being and diversity of our workforce. With 50% women and 5% representation from people with disabilities (PwD) and LGBTQIA+ communities, we are proud of our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment,” Mr. Nadir Godrej said.
Mr. Sudhir Sitapati said the Chengalpattu plant represented a transformational shift in the company’s manufacturing capabilities, serving as Godrej Consumer Products’ first fully integrated facility under one roof.
This advanced facility will produce products from some of our best-selling brands, including Cinthol, Godrej No. 1, GoodKnight, Godrej Aer, and Godrej Expert Hair Colour. We foresee this factory generating ₹1,500 crore in turnover once all planned production lines are fully operational, he said.
