A stray dog has gone on a biting spree for the last three days, seriously injuring at least 30 persons in Koomapatti near Watrap in Virudhunagar district.

The injured have been admitted to government and private hospitals in Watrap, Rajapalayam and Srivilliputtur for treatment.

With Koomapatti town panchayat authorities yet to capture the dog, many persons have chosen to remain indoors fearing attack by the dog. They were also not sending their children to the local school.

As the dog started attacking livestock, the irate cattle-rearers staged a road blockade near Koomapatti bus stand along with their animals. As the family members and the relatives of those bitten by the dog also joined them, tension prevailed there for a while.

Police officials tried to pacify them. The people complained that had the local body officials acted promptly after the dog bit one or two persons on Sunday, so many persons would not have suffered. Only after the protest, the officials had woken up, the protesters complained.

They also said it was not that just only one dog was posing a threat to the people. Several stray dogs were threatening pedestrians, especially women and children. The people were afraid of walking on streets at night.

After the local body authorities promised to catch the dog by Tuesday night did the agitators dispersed.
