Southern Railway to install new turn back facility at Gummidipoondi railway station for operating more suburban services in north section

The Southern Railway will improve and increase the number of suburban train services on the north section beyond Athipattu Pudhu Nagar and has proposed to install a new turn back facility in Gummidipoondi railway station. The new turn back facility once commissioned would pave way for improving the operational efficiency and faster switching of the suburban trains from up line to down line.

Chennai Divisional Railway Manager B. Vishwanath Eerya said at present a turn back facility is available after the Gummidipoondi railway station and this results in the delaying the operation of suburban trains. The Gudur section being one of the congested stretch where both freight and express trains are operated frequently, the presence of only two tracks has resulted in limited operation of suburban trains beyond Athipattu. Also the turn back facility for switching the trains to the other track being present beyond the Gummidipoondi railway station the train services are hit by delays. To overcome this issue it has been proposed to install a new turn back facility as part of modernising signal works before the Gummidipoondi railway station. The work set to cost ₹5 crore would pave way for faster turn back time by having entry and exit of commuters in the up platform and saving in the operational efficiency of the electrical multiple units (EMUs).

Social activist S. Suresh Babu said Gummidipoondi is an important industrial hub with several big industries functioning in the industrial complexes. While the presence of four lines till Athipattu Pudhu nagar has paved way for operating more train services, the availability of two lines beyond Athipattu has resulted in Southern Railway not able to operate more suburban services similar to Tambaram section. He wanted the Southern Railway to construct four lines till Sullurpetta justifying it in view of the increasing population from north Chennai using the services, at the earliest.
