Reinstate transit facility for international passengers at Tiruchi airport: Durai Vaiko plea

Tiruchi Lok Sabha MP Durai Vaiko has requested Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu to reinstate transit facility at the international airport here.

In a memorandum to the Minister, Mr. Durai Vaiko said the new integrated terminal at the airport was well-equipped to handle increased international traffic, and reinstating the transit facility would greatly enhance convenience for travellers while also creating new opportunities for economic and logistical growth in the region.

The airport had grown rapidly in recent years and handles a significant number of international services. With direct connectivity to destinations such as Singapore, Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Doha and Kuwait, the airport was uniquely positioned to serve as a regional transit hub in south India.

The new integrated terminal was equipped with world-class infrastructure. However, the absence of the Internationational – to – International transit facility prevented the airport from realising its full potential.

At the old terminal, passengers travelling between Dubai and Singapore were provided with international – to -international transit option via Tiruchi. However, after the new terminal became operational in June 2024, the transit facility was not provided.

Restoring the facility would enable passengers to seamlessly connect between international destinations through Tiruchi, improve airline occupancy rates and strengthen the airport’s role in both trade and passenger movement.

Mr. Durai Vaiko requested the Civil Aviation Minister to direct the authorities concerned to take necessary action for the early restoration of the transit facility at the airport, thereby enabling the airport to serve its growing international passenger base more effectively.
