Additional Chief Secretary and Project Director of World Bank-aided Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation Project (TNIAMP) Tenkasi S. Jawahar inspected the rebuilt Thamizhakurichi check-dam, which was damaged in the floods in 2023.

The 80-meter-long Thamizhakurichi check-dam was built in 1950 across Pachchaiyar River flowing from the Western Ghats. The structure was built to divert the excess flood water of Pachchaiyar River to Thamizhaakurichi tank feeding over 200 acres of land.

After the check-dam was damaged badly in the 2023 floods, its length was increased to 120 meters and rebuilt at a cost of ₹9.50 crore under the Contingency Emergency Response Component of World Bank-aided TNIAMP. The length of the structure was increased from 809 meter to 120 meter to avert similar damage in future.
