A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State government to implement education loan waiver scheme as promised by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in its election manifesto in 2021.
The case is expected to be listed for hearing before the first Division Bench of Chief Justice K.R. Shriram and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq. The petition had been filed by Manimaran, 56, of Tiruppur whose daughter had taken a loan of ₹2.75 lakh for pursuing a computer science engineering course.
Stating that his daughter could not secure a job despite passing out of the course in first class in 2019, the petitioner said, his family and he had to undergo termendous mental agony and humiliation due to their inability to repay the education loan obtained from a nationalised bank in 2015.
Claiming that the DMK as well as other political parties including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Congress had promised education loan waivers during various elections between 2016 and 2024, he said those promises remained unkept.
