In line with the announcement made by Minister for Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan over introducing ‘pink autos’ in Chennai to ensure the safety of women, the Tamil Nadu government has proposed to amend the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

According to the draft amendment, ‘pink auto’ are auto rickshaws owned and driven by women drivers under Pink Auto Scheme of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department and they would be in pink colour uniform. The pink autos would be installed with GPS/VLTD connected to the police helpline to ensure rapid response during emergencies.

In June last year, the Minister had announced the pink auto would be introduced in Chennai and that a subsidy of ₹1 lakh each would be provided to 200 women auto drivers. He said the autos would help women passengers commute safely from the train and bus termini.
