Scientists at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) have secured a patent for their innovative process of coating nano-cellulose aerogels with beeswax.

The patent was granted for the development of this technique, which involves using a thermal-induced phase separation process to coat aerogels with beeswax, making them hydrophobic (water-repellent), according to a release.

The eco-friendly process had used only sustainable materials and had been cost-effective and simple. The technology could be applied to make any solid material hydrophobic. This advancement had held great potential for environmentally friendly packaging, biomedical applications, and other ecological uses, it said.

The new technology was developed under the leadership of Professor Jinu Jacob George from the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology. The research was conducted by postdoctoral fellow Dr. Deepu A. Gopakumar, along with researchers Ajith Vattothukunnel and Dr. Aishwarya Paulose, according to the release.
