Container lorries will be allowed to use Mada Streets between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. only. The Regional Transport Office will issue special passes for residents to use two-wheelers on these roads.

Parking of vehicles along the Mada streets around the Arunachaleswara temple has been a cause of inconvenience to pedestrians, mostly pilgrims and local residents.

Tourist vehicles continue to park on the narrow paths despite the ban imposed on four-wheelers and autorickshaws by the district administration from February 1.

The decision to impose the ban was made at the consultative meeting chaired by the Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports, E.V. Velu, in the presence of the then Collector D. Bhaskara Pandian and Superintendent of Police D. Sudhakar in January.

“As per the new traffic changes, only two-wheelers and pedestrians will be allowed to use the Mada streets. However, cars and tourist vans continue to be parked on the streets, causing trouble to pedestrians,” P. Bhaskaran, secretary, Tiruvannamalai All Traders’ Association, said, adding that the traffic police had failed to implement the ban order.

As per the new rules, four-wheelers will be prohibited from using the Mada streets and container lorries will be allowed to use the streets only between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Moreover, the Regional Transport Office will issue special passes for residents to use two-wheelers on these roads.

Open spaces such as playgrounds on the outskirts of the town were identified to permit tourists to park their vehicles safely.

Additionally, traffic police were instructed to prevent the entry of tourist vehicles into the town.

Last year, the corporation demolished encroachments on these stretches.

Corporation officials said efforts had been taken to prevent illegal parking on narrow roads in the town and that civic officials were to inform the local police in case of transgression of parking rules.

“More barricades and police personnel are required to prevent illegal parking on these stretches due to the huge crowd that come to worship at the temple,” said a corporation official.
