Two sub-committees of the High Court-mandated committee to oversee the demolition and reconstruction of Towers B and C of Chander Kunj Army Towers located on Silversand Island at Vyttila, submitted their reports during the meeting of the committee on Monday.

The next meeting is slated for March 15, it is learnt.

One of the sub-committees had been constituted to assess the rent so that families who are living in the apartments can be relocated to suitable accommodation units during the time of reconstruction.

The other sub-committee made an estimate for the cost of demolition and reconstruction. A site visit by the agency which might demolish the towers is also likely this week.

Representatives of residents who attended Monday’s meeting sought rent for all families. Sources said they demanded a hassle-free demolition of the two towers, their reconstruction as per norms, and also a probe into how steel bars corroded and cracks developed in the towers that were built by Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO). They said further details would be announced on March 15.

The Kerala High Court had in February ordered the demolition of the unsafe towers (B and C) and the formation of an expert committee, overseen by the District Collector, to manage the process.
