One arm of the road overbridge (ROB) constructed on the GST Road at Singaperumalkoil — the right hand side two-lane wide arm that carries traffic from Chengalpattu towards Chennai and also towards Sriperumbudur — was opened for traffic on Wednesday.
Motorists coming from Chengalpattu side and heading towards Sriperumbudur will take a left at the rotary on top to reach Sriperumpudur (Singaperumalkoil – Sriperumpudur – Tiruvallur – Redhills (SSTR) Road (SH-57).
Similarly, vehicles from Sriperumbudur side and proceeding to Chennai can also take this ROB since this side of the arm is a four-lane wide facility.
Minister for MSMEs T.M. Anbarasan, who inaugurated the ROB, said that the arm would bring relief to those who commute to Sriperumbudur and Oragadam.
Work on the remaining arm that will carry traffic from Chennai to the Chengalpattu side is under way and is expected to be completed in a few months with three decks remaining.
Work to construct the facility that is coming up between Guduvanchery and Singaperumalkoil Railway stations was taken up under the Railway Works programme 2006-2007. The State government accorded the administrative sanction in March 2008 for ₹52.89 crores and the work began in February 2011.
Though the work on the Sriperumbudur side was completed by August 2013, it had to be foreclosed by October 2014 due to a delay in obtaining No Objection Certificate from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the construction of rotary over the GST Road, which is a national highway.
Thereafter, when the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) connecting Poonjeri near Mamallapuram with the Ennore Port was announced, a decision was taken to connect this ROB with the CPRR and accordingly, the design of the rotary was modified. The NHAI then accorded in-principle approval for the same. The revised administrative sanction was obtained for ₹138 crore.
