The Ernakulam Central police are yet to nab anyone in connection with the alleged ransacking of the Kochi Corporation’s Mahakavi G Memorial along Abraham Madamaakkal Road near the Kerala High Court on Monday (March 3, 2025) midnight.
Miscreants had reportedly damaged the lighting system of the open auditorium at the memorial, plaques highlighting the late poet’s achievements along with their illumination, and pipelines supplying water to the facility. Two earthmovers at the construction site of the Prosecution Directorate were also allegedly damaged by the suspected miscreants. While one earthmover was gutted by fire, the arrival of firefighters from the Club Road fire station reportedly prevented the other from being set afire.
“We are probing the incident, and a case will be registered if we find anything substantial. The absence of CCTVs in the area makes it difficult to track down the suspects. The security guards at the memorial were asleep when the incident took place,” police sources said.
The Corporation secretary had filed a complaint regarding the alleged ransacking of the memorial, causing damage worth around ₹3 lakh. The memorial, located next to the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, remains largely isolated, especially at night. There have been complaints that the area has reportedly become a hub for drug peddlers and substance abusers.
