NGOs and former elected representatives on Sunday organised a peaceful hunger protest demanding the conduct of local body elections in 28 districts of the State.

The tenure of rural local governments in 28 districts ended on January 5, 2025. But the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has not yet notified the conduct of elections.

Claiming that the State government has not shown interest in the matter, former elected representatives said the residents were facing difficulties because of 91,975 vacancies in the rural local governments in 28 districts. Residents have been unable to get basic amenities such as water supply and streetlights because of the delay in conduct of elections.

NGOs such as Thannatchi, Arappor Iyakkam, Voice of People, Institute of Grassroots Governance and Thozhan participated. Over 200 former elected representatives of local bodies participated.
