The Director of National Commission for Scheduled Castes S. Ravivarman inspected Kai Kalathur village in the district on Tuesday where a driver belonging to the Adi Dravidar community was recently murdered and conducted an inquiry in connection with the case.
The Kai Kalathur police had registered a case in connection with the killing of driver Manikandan and arrested another driver Devendran – a caste Hindu – on charges of committing the crime.
Manikandan and Devendran of Kai Kalathur worked as drivers of paddy harvester vehicles belonging to a person by name Arunkumar who has also been named as an accused. Constable Sridhar of the Kai Kalathur station was placed under suspension following the murder.
Accompanied by district police officers and other officials, Mr. Ravivarman went to the house of the victim and spoke to the Manikandan’s wife and other family members and ascertained their version as part of his inquiry. Later, Mr. Ravivarman met Perambalur Collector Grace Pachuau and Superintendent of Police Adarsh Pachera here.
The Perambalur SP in a recent media interaction had stated that the murder was not caste-related and it had resulted from a personal dispute between the two individuals.
