A car was destroyed in a fire that erupted suddenly while on the move near the Hopes College stop along Peelamedu Road in Coimbatore city on Saturday night.

The occupants of the special-utility vehicle moved to safety immediately after noticing fumes billowing from the bonnet. Fire engulfed the vehicle thereafter, halting vehicular movement.

A fire tender from Peelamedu Fire Station was rushed to the spot. Fire and Rescue Service personnel doused the flames in an hour-long operation, and restored traffic movement.

The cause for the fire could not be established immediately.

In another incident late Saturday evening, a two-wheeler caught fire at Luna Nagar along Thadagam Road in the city.
