The mortal remains of a migrant worker who got trapped under the rocks at a stone quarry near Singampuneri were retrieved by the rescue team in Sivaganga on Wednesday.

Sources said the rescue operation was stopped late at night on Tuesday, owing to fears of a collapse of unstable rocks at the site.

On Wednesday, the body of B. Harshith, 28, of Odisha, one of the five workers who died in the rockslide.

On the previous day, four workers — M. Muruganandam, 49, of Odaipatti; M. Arumugam, 53, and M. Andichammy, 50, of Keelavazhavu in Madurai; and C. Ganesan, 49, of Kuzhicheevalpatti, died in the rockslide.

As the S.S. Kottai police have registered a case against quarry owner Megavarman, and further investigation is under way, Collector Asha Ajith has suspended the quarry’s licence and instructed the Department of Geology and Mining to conduct a drone survey of the quarry near Singampuneri and other quarries in the district.

Minister for Cooperation K.R. Periyakaruppan handed over the solatium of ₹10.50 lakh each, announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, to the families of the deceased. The district administration said the solatium for Harshith would be handed over to his family once they arrive to receive his body.
