A 33-year-old man drove a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus out of the Thiruvanmiyur bus terminus and rammed a lorry on East Coast Road near Akkarai in the early hours of Thursday.

The police arrested the man — L. Abraham of Besant Nagar — who is an interior car decorator, after a chase.

They said Abraham, in an inebriated state, went to the bus terminus around 2.30 a.m.

He got into an empty bus (plying Broadway-Kovalam), drove it out of the terminus and headed towards ECR.

On an alert from MTC staff, Thiruvanmiyur police personnel went to the spot and alerted the Akkarai police checkpost.

Abraham reportedly drove the vehicle recklessly and stopped only after ramming a lorry near the checkpost.

The lorry driver informed the Akkarai police, who gave a chase and caught Abraham.

They recovered the bus and handed him over to the Tiruvanmiyur police, who arrested him.

During interrogation, Abraham told the police that he had a dispute with a bus conductor over ticket money and had stolen the bus in a bid to take revenge.

He was remanded to judicial custody after questioning.
