Man held for bid to snatch gold chain from constable

The Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested a 40-year-old suspect who allegedly snatched a gold chain from a woman constable despite her resistance at Pazhavanthangal Railway Station.

The Government Railway Police said the 25-year-old woman constable is working with the Chennai City Police. She is also a resident of Pazhavanthangal and used to commute by EMU train daily to her office. On Saturday night, after routine work, she travelled in the EMU train upto Pazhavanthangal. At midnight, she got down at the station and proceeded on the second platform to come out from the station to reach her house. It was pitch dark in the area and no one was around at the time. An unidentified man who followed her struck at her and waylaid her. He also pushed her down. She resisted his attempt to snatch her chain and She also raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, the public also gathered and came to her rescue. By then, the suspect snatched her gold chain and took to his heels. Public quickly caught and thrashed him, said police sources.

He was handed over to GRP, Mambalam who reached the spot following the alert. Further interrogation revealed that the suspect is Sathayabalu, 43 from Chitlapakkam.

A senior police officer of GRP said, “We have scrutinised CCTV footage from the place of occurrence and found that it is a case of snatching a chain. Further investigation is on.” The police officer ruled out sexual harassment to her.
