In a rain-related accident, two women and a boy were killed after a sunshade, constructed with limestone and surkhi mortar, collapsed at Valayankulam near Madurai airport on Monday (May 19, 2025) night.

The deceased were identified as V. Ammapillai (70), her grandson A. Veeramani (10) and C. Venkatti (54), a woman from the neighbourhood.

The trio was seated on the verandah outside the house of Ammapillai when the sunshade came down crashing around 9 p.m. All the three sustained head injuries.

They were rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Valayankulam for first-aid. However, Venkatti was declared brought dead by the doctor.

Later, Ammapillai and Veeramani were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai city where both of them succumbed to injuries.

The police said that heavy rain which lashed the region for nearly an hour on Monday evening had weakened the old structure of the four-decade-old house.

Perungudi police are investigating.
