Promising high returns, a man from Abu Dhabi has allegedly duped a 56-year-old man from Madurai.
According to the petitioner P.N. Kumaresh Babu of P and T Nagar here, he had submitted a complaint to the Economic Offences Wing (Chennai) officers for legal action.
The petitioner said that when he was working in Abu Dhabi in 2019, he came in contact with a person identified as Ansari of Tirunelveli. He claimed to be working as a technical supervisor in a private company and also did part-time business by investing in gold.
Post Covid-19, when Kumaresh Babu returned home, he continued to be in touch with Ansari, who claimed to be working in Abu Dhabi.
It is said that Ansari had stated that he purchased gold bars at cheaper rates and sold them when the price increased. He also claimed to be sharing the profits to many people not only from India, but also in Middle East countries.
Believing, Kumaresh Babu had sent ₹8 lakh over a period of two years through bank transfers to the account numbers mentioned by Ansari. Claiming that the profit margins were very less, Ansari, it is said, had given paltry sums.
When Kumaresh Babu had insisted on returning his money, Ansari could not be reached. Efforts to find his dwelling in Tirunelveli were also not fruitful, as the relatives distanced themselves from Ansari, the petition stated.
The ADGP (EOW) Bala Naga Devi received the complaint and directed the officials to investigate, the petitioner said.
