Two families who were relocated due to a landslide threat, from Marathukunnu near Akamala of Talappilly taluk in Thrissur, have now been granted their own land. District Collector Arjun Pandian on Tuesday handed over the land documents and tax payment receipts to beneficiaries Komalam and Satish. Each family received documentation for a plot of land measuring four and a half cents at Enkakkad village.

Following the heavy rains in July and August of 2024, which caused significant landslide threats in Akamala and Marathukunnu, the District Collector visited the area, and experts from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), Geology, Soil Conservation, and Groundwater departments conducted inspections.

Based on the report from the KSDMA, it was determined that except for the two families in the danger zone the remaining residents could continue living in the area. Authorities advised caution during heavy rains and suggested moving to safer locations if necessary.

Subsequently, the district administration began the process of relocating the two affected families. They were moved to a safer location, with the Wadakkanchery Municipality being tasked with covering their monthly rental expenses.

To further assist these families, the KSDMA sanctioned ₹6 lakh to purchase land and ₹4 lakh for building homes. Of the ₹4 lakh for construction, ₹2 lakh will be sourced from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund, with the remaining amount provided from the State Disaster Relief Fund.
