Bharatiya Janata Party’s South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri on Wednesday said that the land in Tughlakabad Fort, from where several residents were evicted in 2023, should be given back to them.

In 2023, Archaeological Survey of India had issued eviction notices to all ‘unauthorised’ households within a radius of 100 m of the Tughlakabad Fort. The residents of the houses that were built in the village after 1993 were asked to vacate the premises within 15 days.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Bidhuri said that these notices should be “withdrawn immediately” and the land of the village should be returned to the people of the village.

He said the Tughlakabad was settled by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq about 700 years ago and was historically important as the residents of the village participated in the Revolt of 1857 against the British colonisers. As punishment against their participation, the British confiscated their land, he added.

“This land should be returned because it is not only the right of the villagers but also a true tribute to the martyrs of 1857,” Mr. Bidhuri said further.
