The Kochi port achieved its highest-ever cargo throughput in 2024-25, handling 37.75 million tonnes—a growth of nearly 4% over the previous year’s 36.32 million tonnes. The port has recorded continuous growth in cargo traffic since 2020-21 with a compund annual growth rate of 5.04%.

A communication from the Cochin Port Authority (CPA) here said the port received 1,265 vessels with an average parcel size of 29,839 tonnes, an improvement of 3.81% over the previous year’s 28,745 tonnes.

Liquid bulk cargo accounted for the largest share of the cargo handled at the port in the last financial year, making up 66% of the total volume at 25.10 million tonnes. Of this, crude oil constituted 17.26 million tonnes, followed by petroleum products at 6.3 million tonnes. Other liquids, including sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, ammonia, methanol, and LNG, totalled 1.54 million tonnes.

LPG offtake at the port also improved, rising from 1.34 lakh tonnes to 3.64 lakh tonnes in the last financial year. The bunkering business remained steady at 3.54 lakh tonnes compared to 3.44 lakh tonnes in the previous financial year.

Dry bulk and break-bulk cargo accounted for 4% of the port’s total cargo throughput. This included cement, rock phosphate, sulphur, ilmenite sand, alumina, and steel products. Boosted by a robust construction industry, cement volumes rose by 10.67% to 8.36 lakh tonnes in the last financial year, up from 7.55 lakh tonnes in the previous year.

The container business at the International Container Transshipment Terminal showed robust growth, the CPA release added. Container throughput reached 8.34 lakh TEUs, marking an 11% increase compared to the previous year’s 8% growth.
