Kasaragod adopts eco-friendly German technology for road renovation

Eight major roads in Kasaragod are being renovated using eco-friendly German Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) technology, which repurposes existing materials to rebuild roads. The innovative method reduces material consumption and environmental impact, providing durable, low-maintenance roads.

Officials said the project, which reconstructs roads using existing materials reduces the need for new construction resources promoting eco-conscious development.

The Chaiyom-Kanhirapoil road is the first to be revamped under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) at a cost of ₹3.5 crore. This four-kilometre stretch, 5.5 metres wide, is being reconstructed using advanced machinery that breaks down the existing surface and blends it with stabilising compounds like cement, lime, and stone.

Under FDR technology, the road surface is excavated to a depth of 30 cm, treated with chemical compounds, and stabilised to create a strong base similar to concrete. After a seven-day reinforcement process, a layer of bituminous tar is applied, ensuring increased durability and lower maintenance needs.

The initiative is financially supported by both the State and Central governments, contributing 40% and 60%, respectively.

Other roads set for renovation include Cheruvathur-Valiyapoyil, Maniyampara-Deradukka Shiriya-Koodadukka, Miyapadavu-Daigoli-Poyyath Vayal-Nandarapadavu, Athrukuzhi-Nellikatte-Puttipallam-Edneer, Paika-Neerolipara, and Karakode-Parakkakkai roads. Authorities expect the project to be completed within four months, after which the roads will be accessible to the public.
