Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed to be University has appointed RLV Ramakrishnan Assistant Professor in Bharatanatyam, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s legacy. This is the first time the cultural institution has implemented a reservation policy in its appointments. Additionally, the university has upheld gender neutrality in its hiring process.

Dr. Ramakrishnan, who has been fighting discrimination on caste and colour basis, particularly after facing casteist remarks from another dancer, has now created history by becoming the first male dance teacher at Kalamandalam in several decades. Dr. Ramakrishnan, who holds a PhD in Mohiniyattom, is the brother of the late actor Kalabhavan Mani.

Success of resilience

His appointment comes as a sweet victory, symbolising resilience against prejudice.

Vice-Chancellor of Kalamandalam B. Ananthakrishnan highlighted the historic significance of Dr. Ramakrishnan’s appointment, stating: “For the first time, Kalamandalam has implemented a reservation system for teacher appointments with roster points. This is a significant shift in our tradition. Experts, including teachers from Kalakshetra in Chennai, unanimously selected Dr. Ramakrishnan. There was no second opinion on his expertise. We have also ensured gender neutrality in our hiring.”

Dr. Ramakrishnan shared his pride in his appointment with The Hindu, terming it an inspiration for future students. “If you remain persistent in pursuit of your goal, you will achieve it. This is not just a job; it’s an opportunity to become part of the history of an esteemed institution like Kerala Kalamandalam. While temporary male teachers have been appointed in the past, this is the first time in decades that Kalamandalam has selected a male teacher for dance. This move towards gender neutrality is a commendable step,” he said.

‘Change, a constant’

Dr. Ramakrishnan also sent a powerful message to critics of change, emphasising that transformation was an inevitable aspect of the arts. “Classical arts such as Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattom have evolved significantly over time. Those who resist change are only creating unnecessary barriers to progress,” he said.

Dr. Ramakrishnan’s journey began with his graduation from the RLV College of Fine Arts in Tripunithura, followed by a postgraduation in Mohiniyattom with first rank from Mahatma Gandhi University. His doctoral thesis, Aattathinte Aanvazhikal (The path of men in dance), further solidified his academic and artistic credentials.
