Job working powerloom weavers in Coimbatore, Tiruppur districts withdraw month-long strike

Over 1.25 lakh powerlooms in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts that were on strike since March 19 are expected to resume production from Tuesday.

Powerloom unit owners in Somanur, Avinashi, Kannampalayam, Thekkalur, Perumanallur, and Pudhupalayam in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts went on strike demanding a hike in wages paid to them by the master weavers. They claimed that the master weavers were paying the 2014 wages, which was not viable as the input costs had increased.

Ministers K. Senthilbalaji and MP Saminathan held talks on Sunday evening in Coimbatore in the presence of officials with the master weavers and the job working powerloom unit owners and it was agreed by the master weavers to increase the wages by 15 % for the Somanur variety fabric and 10 % for other varieties.

The hike would be from the wages agreed in 2022.

E.M. Bhoopathi, president of the Coimbatore Tiruppur District Job Working Powerloom Weavers Association, said the weavers were also on an indefinite fast since Tuesday, and they withdrew the fast on Sunday evening. The production loss because of the strike was ₹1,000 crores, he claimed.
