Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has terminated the services of a contractual assistant professor following his arrest on the charge of raping a lecturer at the university.

In a statement on Wednesday, the JMI said the alleged assault did not take place on its campus. It added, “Nonetheless, the administration, conveying its severe denunciation of the grave crime, has terminated his services.”

“Any assault on the honour, dignity, and rights of women will not be tolerated. The university is sure that justice would be served, and the law will take its own course,” said the university.

The victim told the police that the accused established relations with her on the pretext of marriage. However, he refused to marry her, citing “mismatched horoscopes”.
