A day after Andhra Pradesh police named YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president Y.S. Jagan MohanReddy as an accused in the case pertaining to death of Cheeli Singaiah, the former Chief Minister accused the government of changing the narrative.

Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy raised concerns over the denial of Z-plus security, stating that it was not a privilege but a protocol-based entitlement for former Chief Ministers.

Singaiah was run over by a car of Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s convoy during his Rentapalla tour recently.

Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said that had he been provided with Z-plus security cover, the tragic incident would not have occurred.

He asserted that the entire responsibility for the convoy’s safety lies with the State government. In a post on X on Monday, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that despite having informed officials in advance, standard security protocols were ignored—neither pilot vehicles nor rope parties.

Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy said that he had to arrange for a bulletproof vehicle at his own expense, despite it being a mandatory provision under Z-plus cover.  “The government provided a driver though,” Mr. Jagan said.

“If security had been provided, someone would not have come under the vehicle. Either the government has failed in this regard, or the narrative is fabricated,” he said.

‘Why SP’s statement altered?’

“Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu orchestrated a political vendetta. He has failed to uphold the democratic protocols. Why was the SP’s initial statement altered?” he asked.

Calling the TDP’s response ‘morally hollow’, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that the ruling alliance had shifted focus from pressing issues such as corruption, poll promises and financial mismanagement.

Mr.  Jagan Mohan Reddy questioned the rationale behind the restrictions imposed on his recent visit to Rentapalla in Sattenapalli constituency, where he intended to meet party workers and express solidarity with the distressed farmers.

“Why are opposition leaders being barred from meeting their supporters? Had Mr. Naidu or Deputy CM K. Pawan Kalyan ever faced such treatment during the YSRCP’s tenure?” he asked.

Support for bereaved family

The YSRCP president said that soon after the incident, he had asked the party leaders, including Balasani Kiran and AmbatiRambabu, to extend support to the bereaved family and announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh.

The death of another supporter due to a heart attack during the same tour, for whom similar support was extended. “This is the value we place on our supporters. Can Mr, Naidu say the same about his actions in such situations?” he asked, criticising the TDP’s ‘selective morality’.
