An indefinite strike at Aralam seeking steps to protect the tribal families of the Aralam farm from wildlife attacks was called off on Friday following the Kerala government’s intervention.

The protest by the Tribal Joint Struggle Committee had completed eight days. The protesters sought urgent measures to clear the undergrowth and instal electric fences in view of the delay in completing the elephant wall. They also demanded steps to end the negligence of the farm by the Forest department officials and to file a case for culpable homicide against the Tribal Mission District Chairman, Secretary and site manager holding them responsible for the deaths of the tribalpeople in wildlife attacks.

The decision to end the agitation came after the Forest Minister’s intervention and Peravoor MLA Sunny Joseph personally conveying the resolution to the protesters. Following this, the District Collector and senior officials visited the farm, assessed the situation and initiated immediate steps to address the concerns of the residents.

The strike was called off after a meeting at the protest site which was addressed by Adivasi-Dalit Munnetta Samiti president Sreeraman Koyyon, block panchayat president K. Velayudhan, block panchayat member V. Shobha and representatives of tribal organisations.
