HelpAge India, a non-profit organisation working for elders, marked International Day of Older Persons on Friday (October 3, 2025) with the launch of its new campaign, ‘AdvantAge60: Powering Aspirations – Active, Enabled & Empowered’, to redefine ageing and promote active, meaningful engagement for senior citizens, a press release said.

The event, held in Chennai, was attended by Justice N. Kirubakaran, former Judge of the Madras High Court, and V. Balakrishnan, IPS, Inspector General of Police (Administration), along with academics and social welfare officials.

HelpAge India’s 2022 report found that 40% of elders want to continue contributing and working in later years. A recent study highlighted that while youth often see elders as ‘dependent’, they also view them as ‘wise’ and ‘respected,’ the release said.

Rohit Prasad, CEO of HelpAge India, said the campaign calls for creating opportunities for elders in workplaces, policy, and communities, so that age is not seen as a barrier. Chairperson Kiran Karnik highlighted that elders should be seen as assets, with their skills and experiences tapped into for wider social benefit, according to the release.

The event also honoured nonagenarians and presented the ‘AdvantAge Achievers’ award to 87-year-old R.T. Namasivayam for his service to elder welfare.
