A head constable attached to the Armed Reserve, Coimbatore City, drowned in river Amaravathy near Dharapuram in Tiruppur district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as A. Saravanan, 42, a resident of Pavalam Street near Raja Street in Coimbatore. He had been working in the 11th platoon of the Armed Reserve, Coimbatore City.
The police said Saravanan availed himself of his weekly off on Monday and went to river Amaravathy near Dharapuram along with head constable Raja of the same platoon.
According to the police, Saravanan moved to a deeper portion of the river while taking bath and drowned. Raja, with the help of local public, pulled out Saravanan from the river and rushed him to the Government Hospital at Dharapuram. The medical officer examined him and declared him dead. The body was moved to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The Dharapuram police have launched an investigation into the incident.
