The Delhi High Court ordered the Customs Department in Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to release a golden kada (bangle), belonging to a Dubai-based Sikh man on April 23. The court observed that wearing a kada is an “essential part of the Sikh religious practice”. The Customs in IGIA detained the golden kada on November 29, 2024.

The court directed that Dalvinder Singh Sudan’s 22-carat gold bangle, weighing 60 grams, be released within four weeks, subject to the “payment of applicable warehouse charges”.

During the argument, Mr. Sudan submitted photographs of him wearing the bangle as evidence and stated that being a Sikh, he always wears kada.

The court noted that photographs submitted by Mr. Sudan established that the golden kada was being worn by him at the time of its detention. It was consistent with Sikh religious practices, leaving “no doubt” that it was his “personal belonging”, the court observed.

“The detention of the gold kada is set aside,” the court ruled.
