The doctors and other staff members of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) in Hassan staged a protest, boycotting their work, late at night on February 24, after a group of people allegedly assaulted a post-graduate student.

The group had brought a person, who suffered injuries in a bike accident, to the hospital around 1.30 a.m. The group entered into an argument with the staff alleging delay in treating the patient. Later, they allegedly assaulted a post-graduate student.

This incident triggered an immediate protest by the staff who demanded action against the accused.

On February 25, Dr. B. Rajappa, Director of HIMS, told The Hindu that the staff staged a protest for two hours following the assault. “The police booked a case against four persons and took three of them into custody. They have assured us that the fourth person would be arrested soon,” he said.
